I have asked to be removed from ashtangi.net because I found this when I accidentally clicked while looking at their front page. It was like stepping in cat shit with bare feet.

Now we all plumb significant depths of banality on our blogs from time to time - some more than others it has to be said - and that is a blogger's prerogative. However, innocent web surfers should never be exposed to such a high incidence of banality on one, lone, blog. The only conceivable reason to have activated such a blog is, well, to have a blog. End of chat.

Such 'toilet' (as the vernacular English expression so aptly puts it) amounts to cyber pollution of the worst kind. I would never condone censorship. I would however ensure that I never again have even a tangential association with this type of drivel. Is it even real? I would rather have ads for Lockheed Martin, McDonalds and Robert Mugabe on my blog that have it publicised along side this kind of schmucky nebisch tripe.

Well you've hit on a sore subject for me. Clearly the blog is a joke; however, when I tried to "screen and otherwise approve" blogs before adding them I was accused of censhorship and other people didn't want to be associated with the community because I was some gestapo. It's a no win situation for me. I either just say "Okay, all blogs that mention they practice ashtanga yoga are fine and I can't control the content, the tone, the words, etc." or I have to make some type of rules for "who is acceptable" to add to the list. That becomes a very big and ugly slipperly slope.

It's a difficult situation to be in. I've been asked by two people to remove that blog from the blog roll but what do I do? How would you handle it? I have this same issue with blogs that are clearly not true personal blogs but a series of satire. It's almost driven me to the point of shutting down the site entirely to be quite honest.

I actually discussed this on my blog awhile back... not sure what to do or how to do it. Not sure how to make it an open community in the spirit of union and, yet, still have some form of sanity to it.

I am on my way to practice but I'll remove your blog when I get a chance. I'm sorry to do that but I understand... it's the same feeling that makes me want to shut the whole thing down.

I totally get ya - and understand your awkward position of course.

yep, it's true that it can be a slippery slope - mediating anything immediatley removes it from the realm of theory, which is what free speach is, a theoretical right the existence of which must be guaranteed by many forms of protection which include elements of discrimination, and places it squarely in the realm of the real. No one person wants to have to take responsibility for that if it opens them up to what would be totally undeserved criticism. In this instance however the blog in question seems to detract significantly from the integrity of the site, thus diminishing the overall quality of expression therein without permission from anyone else on the site. 'The blog' is itself a form of censorship since it aims to denigrate and devalue what sense of community and authenticity such a site provides without declaring itself or asking permission to dispute the common values which hold the whole concept together. The net is big and criticism can be levelled from another quarter of it should someone feel that it is necessary.

If you can be bothered perhaps you could make the single criteria for membership that all blogs be respectful of and polite towards all others, even when disagreeing. Satire, sarcasm and even irony may be said to be impolite and disrespectful by definition. No one would put up with an abusive intervention like this in person, so why on the net?

Jb...would you leave your shala because a couple of young boys or girls who did their own thing were practicing there, maybe giggling a little, maybe acting stupid a little? If you don' want to be part of he community anymore, that is your choice. If you do want to be part of a community you have to expect people to annoy you, offend you. I understand your point on the one hand - cheri and adrian are fakes and not even remotely entertaining, and I can't figure out what they are even trying to make fun of, since they don't resemble anyone I know who blogs about yoga - BUT what you are doing in this post and in your actions toward julie is the same thing as a child who has a tanrum in the sandbox and takes his toys and huffs off. They are not the kind of blogs that I like, but you are sounding like a child who can't work and play well with others. Tolerance, jb. It's a good way to NOT sap your own energy.

tangential association??? Like you could ever.

Just to be fair and clear, JB has done nothing to me. I sometimes receive emails from non-bloggers about blogs on the blogroll... It was most likely coincidence that two people saw the same blog posting and wanted to make a comment about it. JB simply asked me to remove him, which I did... I respect his opinion.. he has done nothing to offend or otherwise mess with me. :)

JB: You said "If you can be bothered perhaps you could make the single criteria for membership that all blogs be respectful of and polite towards all others, even when disagreeing."

That's a hugely slippery slope putting me in the venue of having to judge what is respectful and polite. Not a good place to be.

It's really a no-win situation. Last month I attempted to "filter" blogs. That went over like a lump of coal. So I decided that I would simply add all blogs claiming to be ashtanga yoga practitioners.... it's all I can do. There are a few blogs on the blog roll that I don't agree with, a few that I think are complete fakes... I'm just another person with my own opinion so I will continue to just let it go. As OKRGR said yesterday, let it sink or swim on its own. If everyone, like you, decides it sucks and they want no part of it, it sinks... if the community, as a whole, continues to grow and find value in being somewhat connected, it will grow. I'm okay with it either way.

I'm sorry to see you jumping off the a-net. I understand where you're coming from, and wish you would reconsider, since the a-net has been a pretty unique place for building the international ashtanga community. I'm not ready to give up on it yet.
